Free to Be You & Me in Canton MA
Regular readers of my blog know that I am a big fan and supporter of the Performing Arts Department in the Canton Public Schools. The Canton High School Drama Club is putting on its last show of the season this upcoming weekend.
This year they are doing something different and are producing a children's musical. This year's production is Free to Be You and Me, a musical based on the 1970's book and Emmy-award winning television special of the same name. This show sends the message of encouraging tolerance and individuality. Celebrating individuality and challenging stereotypes empowers both children and adults with the freedom to be who they want to be and to have compassion and empathy for others who may be different.
I was lucky enough to catch a rehearsal of the show the other day and was quite impressed. Children of all ages - and adults who are still kids at heart - will love the songs, dancing and vibrant colors - not to mention the heartwarming story. Included are fun songs such as "Free to Be You and Me", "It's All Right to Cry" and "Parents are People Too." The highlight was a guest appearance by Canton High principal Dr. Doug Dias who portrayed - who else - the principal! He was a great sport for participating and it was fun for the high school kids to watch too!
It is a great way for our high school students to interact with and share their talents with our younger students who are just starting out in school and figuring out who they are. It is a great example of the sharing and collaboration that goes on among the students and teachers in the Canton Public Schools.
Performances are Friday May 20th at 10:30 am (already being attended by some of the classrooms within the Canton Public Schools) and Saturday May 21st at 2:00 pm at Canton High's Morse Auditorium. Admission is $5.00.
There is always something going on in Canton MA! This event represents Event Number 19 in my ongoing series of 31 Things to do In May in Canton MA.
