Canton's JFK Elementary Students Perform an Original Play

Canton's JFK Elementary students perform their original play The Mystery at the Museum on Jan 24 & 25, 2014.When it comes time for budget cuts in schools, oftentimes, arts programs are the first to go.  Unfortunately, these are considered "fluff" and nonessential.  Luckily, Canton elementary schools and the CAPT (Canton Association of Parents and Teachers) disagree.  In what has become an annual rite of passage for the fifth-graders at Canton's JFK Elementary School, the show must go on.  And this year, there's a twist!

What: The Mystery at the Museum
Where: Canton High School Auditorium
When: January 24 & 25, 2014 at 7pm

Instead of adapting a work that is already in existence, Canton's JFK Elementary students will be performing an original play this year.  Ms. Barbara Carbone, a 4th grade teacher at JFK and the director of this year's 5th grade play, decided to change things up a little by having the students work with award-winning children's author Steven Krasner to create something unique.  Mr. Krasner, or "Steve" as he prefers the students to call him, visited Ms. Carbone's 4th grade class last year via JFK's Author in Residence program.  During his three day workshop, Steve and the kids came up with the basic idea for what would eventually become 'The Mystery at the Museum'.  Throughout the last several months, students have been adding/editing characters and dialogue to their original play under Ms. Carbone's supervision.

This fifth grade production is more than just a play.  It is an opportunity to teach Canton students about being accountable to others, how to work as a team and speaking in front of an audience.  Whether this is the one and only time a child steps foot on the stage or it becomes a lifelong passion, these are all valuable lessons that can be carried on into adulthood.

All out-of-pocket expenses are initially covered by the CAPT.  They depend on ticket sales to help continue the program from year to year.  So make sure you come to Canton High School's auditorium at 7pm on Friday, January 24th or Saturday, January 25th to watch Canton's JFK Elementary students perform an original play created entirely by these very talented kids.  Months of preparation have gone into these two performances.  Your support will mean the world to them.
